Happy New Year from our family to yours

"Holiday Horror", Deputies hovered outside after searching the home for evidence in this Christmas homicide" Star Beacon 12/26/09. "Brazen Burglar" robbed 12 homes while his victims slept. Star Beacon 12/24/09." Gunman beats, robs 57-year-old blind man" Star Beacon 12/18/09, “Six home break-ins during daylight hours” Star Beacon. Don't become another statistic in the New Year, start 2010 by being informed and protecting yourself, your loved ones and your investment.      It does not seem to matter what community in which you live in the local newspapers are filled with horrific events, a serious sign of the times that we are all facing.      Deputies hovered outside a home on Christmas day where a man was murdered in his home in Ashtabula County. Sheriff Billy Johnson from the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department was quoted during the Brazen Burglar investigation as saying " “It’s becoming more common to break in when people are still at home,” he stated, “Times are changing. Today, (thieves) really don’t care.” Research into some of these events has shown that the victims either didn't have home security systems or they were never set.      Alarm systems can not guarantee that you won't become a victim but are designed to deter would be intruders from choosing your home or by alerting you at the first possible moment that someone is trying to make you become a victim so that you can take immediate action to protect yourself and your family while the system notifies your local law enforcement agency and will hopefully scare off the intruder with the systems audible alarm.

Don’t become a victim of bad sales practices either and scammed by the fancy ads of alarm companies offering “free” or “low cost” alarm systems. Nothing in life is ever free and statistics show you the consumer end up paying more for the system. Contact ERT Security your local life safety professionals for a no cost evaluation of your security needs.

Six additional home invasions taking place in Ashtabula County are not surprising in the trends of today’s home invasionist. According to Detective Lt. Van Robison of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, “The break-ins, most were committed during daylight hours, The men would walk up to a house and knock on the door, if someone answered, the pair would say they were looking for an individual, If no one responded to the knock, the men would force their way inside.”

According to the latest statistics released by the FBI in 2008 for the previous year in many of the smaller metropolitan areas, in cities with populations from 10,000 to 24,999 violent crime, including murder, assault, and robbery increased by 1.9%. In non-metropolitan counties, violent crime increased by 1.8%.

The Criminal Justice Information Services Division, located in West Virginia compiled the statistics, which includes reports from more than 12,000 agencies across the United States.

Protecting what matters most, ERT Security takes the time to assist you in determining what your needs are to best protect you and your family.

How do I decide On the System that is Right for Me?

Step One, understand the basics. Information from our website www.ertprotectsyou.com and in this newsletter will give you some of the basics of home security systems.

Step Two, determine your goals: for example, to protect your home when no one is there, protect your family at night, or protect your family while one spouse is out of town. (Most buyers have multiple goals.)

Step Three, assess the priority areas to be covered. For example, a Temple University study that indicates 60% of intruders enter through a door; therefore, alarming all doors should be a high priority. In the same study it was also revealed that 79% of burglaries in three communities near Philadelphia, the burglar entered through the first floor. The front door, back door, and first floor windows were the most common means of entry.

Home & Business Hazards from Carbon Minoxide - ERT Security protecting you
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a clear, odorless gas that is poisonous to humans and pets. Defective furnaces, fireplace flues, and oil heaters have long been the primary cause of accidental CO poisoning. There are no perceptible symptoms if an individual's CO levels are less than 10 percent. Most people are unaware that they are being exposed. Here is what to look for

At 10 percent levels, symptoms may mimic the flu or a cold. At levels greater than 20 percent, a person can lose consciousness, go into a coma, or die.

    These may include:

    • Headache

    • Fatigue

    • Mild confusion

    • Irregular breathing and heartbeat

    • Nausea

    • Coughing

Take note especially if everyone in the home is experiencing at least some of the symptoms, and pay particular attention if pets exhibit symptoms since animals cannot get the flu.

    If CO poisoning is suspected
    • Evacuate.

    • Get everyone into the fresh air immediately.

    • Call 9-1-1 from another location.

    • Report it to the fire department, even if everyone is feeling better.

Some common sources of carbon monoxide poisoning include

Furnaces , Gas appliances including, stoves, clothes dryers and water heaters and Automobiles parked in your garage

How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Have your furnace and gas appliances inspected and maintained by a qualified contractor once a year. This should be done before the start of the heating months. In addition to professional annual checkups, periodically check your furnace.

    Look for these things:

    • Flames should be mostly blue and steady.

    • Look for discoloration or soot buildup around the burner access door and vents. This could signal a problem.

    • Check the venting system. Soft, rusted or broken vent piping can release combustion products indoors.

    • Examine the furnace or boiler. See that it's free of dust, rust or any other signs of corrosion.

    • Check air filters regularly. Clean or replace them as needed.

    • Make sure furnace panels and grill are in place and the fan compartment door is closed when the furnace is on. Leaving these doors open could cause CO to build up in living areas.

      Install Carbon Monoxide alarms

It is a good idea to install a CO alarms on each level of your home, and in or near each sleeping area and they can be easily added to your current alarm system and monitored by our central station..

    • Try to keep the detectors at least 20 feet from any fuel burning appliances and at least 10 feet from high humidity locations like bathrooms and kitchens. If an alarm sounds, call a professional to check your gas burning appliances.

      Testing your Carbon Monoxide detector/alarm

One can determine if a CO detector/alarm is working by using special CO alarm testing devices. These devices simulate CO using a small pellet in a package. When the pellet is moistened, it releases a non-toxic gas. After a few minutes, if the alarm is properly working, the alarm should sound. For more information about these testing devices, check with your local hardware store.

Alarm Systems - ERT Security protecting you.

Having a security alarm system decreases the chances of a intrusion. Even if the alarm system does not keep a burglar from breaking in, it may cause the intruder to stay a shorter amount of time.

What Should a Security Alarm System Include?

Most systems rely on a combination of contacts placed at doors and windows and motion sensors.

It is best that all exterior potential points of entry have contacts that sense when they are open. Glass break sensors are also available and recommended.

Motion sensors should not be used as the primary means of detection because they do not detect someone until they are already in your home or business.

The basic elements of a standard home or business security system include:

Control panel: This is where the system wiring terminates, the backup battery is located and where it is connected to the phone lines for monitoring your system.

    • Keypad: This is where the system is armed and disarmed.
    • Siren
    • Inside motion detector: These sense changes in a room caused by human presence. Special motion detectors are available for people who have pets.
    • Door and window contacts: These activate and sounds the alarm when the door or window is opened when the system is armed.
    • A central monitoring station: When the system is monitored, and the alarm is set off, the control panel sends a message to ERT Security's central monitoring station, which is manned 24 hours a day. After attempting to contact the homeowner, the central monitoring station will contact the police, fire department, or EMS.
Additional items that can be added to the basic system are:
    • Smoke detectors
    • Panic and/or Medical Alert buttons
    • Pressure mats for under rugs
    • Closed circuit TV to allow monitoring and/or recording inside or outside a home.
    • Alarm screens for windows.
    • Sump pump monitors
    • Room Temperature or Refrigeration monitors
    Monitor your System

Monitored systems typically work as follows:

    1. The security system senses something.
    2. The security system waits 30 to 45 seconds to give the homeowner a chance to deactivate the system to prevent false alarms.
    3. If the alarm is not deactivated the security system sends a message to the ERT Security monitoring center over telephone lines.
    4. The monitoring center receives the message and verifies the alarm, generally by placing a phone call to the home or business. If they do not receive the proper password or do not receive an answer, they call the police, fire or EMS.
    5. The proper authorities respond.

    * Neighbors or passersby should never investigate an alarm themselves.

Things to Remember About Security Alarm Systems

Intruders realize that most security systems sound inside the house and then the alarm is transferred to remote locations through the telephone lines.

Most phone lines are typically exposed on the outside of the home or business in an easily accessible location where the phone line can be cut. If the telephone line is cut, the security alarm system cannot notify the central monitoring station of the break-in.

If the phone line is run underground until it is inside the home (with the main telephone junction box inside the home), the thief cannot tamper with the telephone line until after he or she has broken in.

Having a protected phone line to your home or business is a good idea whether you have a security alarm system or not.

False Alarm Reduction- ERT Security protecting you.
False alarms can be costly, not only to you in fines but also for the community in which you live. Causing a false alarm utilizes precious resources from your community, or from another communities public safety force. Every time a unit responds to an emergency call it costs money just to start the engine. Depending on the type of alarm that it has to respond to, the costs could be in the thousands of tax dollars within just a few minutes. Unfortuniatly there could be an even higher price paid. You may be taking that unit away from a real emergency where the delay in response time could be causing the loss of life or property. A false alarm means a signal from your alarm system resulting in a response by law enforcement, fire service or emergency medical services when an emergency situation did not exist. Some common causes of false alarms are system users, physical changes to facility, displays and decorations, malfunctioning equipment, heat vents, air conditioning vents, fans (ceiling and table) and animals. ERT Security prides itself in educating all of our clients in false alarm prevention. At ERT your not a customer, your a client because we work with you as a partner in your protection 24 hours a day. Helpful Tips to Eliminate False Alarms Make sure all users have proper knowledge of codes and operations of the alarm. Know how to disarm the system. If the system was installed for one type of facility and remodeling occurs, the alarm should be inspected by ERT® Security for suitability to the changes that have been made. Carefully arrange all decorations, banners and displays. Floating balloons especially metallic or foil types can interfere with motion detectors and activate alarms. Have ERT® Security replace the main battery, and your wireless device batteries to meet manufacturer specifications. Faulty Equipment? If you can’t identify the cause of the activation contact ERT® Security to have your equipment checked and system tested. Heat rises and can cause enough motion to activate alarms, as can air conditioning currents. Motion detectors easily detect small animals (birds, cats, rodents, etc.). Use caution against their entering the premises. Schedule routine system maintenance and checks with ERT® Security. Before leaving, check that all exterior doors are closed and locked also check that all motion sensor areas are clear of moving signs, displays, reflective/helium balloons, etc. Know how to cancel a false alarm quickly. All personnel should be periodically trained in proper alarm operating procedures and false alarm prevention. Report any arming or disarming problems to ERT Security. Protecting Home & Family- ERT Security protecting you.
Becoming a victim can happen to anyone regardless of race, orientation or status and it can happen in any type of neighborhood whether you live in a house, a condo or an apartment, a break-in can permanently shatter your feeling of security at home and has a ripple effect on everyone around you. According to FBI statistics, a residence is burglarized once every 15 seconds in the United States. Fortunately, burglary is probably the most preventable of crimes. By taking just a few simple precautions and an active educated role in protecting yourself, you can dramatically reduce your risks. Every home and situation is different, and there are no 100% guarantees. Of course one of the first steps in preparing yourself and your loved ones is to determine what kind of threat you are trying to protect your family against. An example of this is, defending against personal threats, such as assault, requires different measures than defending against a burglary. Most home burglars do not a give a great deal of thought into planning the job but understanding how they choose a target can go a long way in reducing your chances of becoming a victim. Did you know that more residential burglaries occur during the day? because most homes are normally vacant more often than not. What do burglars look for? Most burglars look for: • Something worth stealing • Easy access combined with low visibility • A home that is unoccupied What can I do to help prevent against break-ins? • Fool them by making your home look occupied all the time. • Use automatic timers on lights when away from home. • Always park your vehicles in the garage with the garage door shut. A burglar may otherwise notice a pattern that a closed garage door or no cars in the driveway means no one is home. Closing the garage door and having curtains or blinds on the garage windows also hides some of your belongings. • Place radios on automatic timers and raise the volume so they can be heard outside. • Lower the sound of your telephone ringer and answering machine so that they can't be heard outside. Don’t leave a message on your machine or voicemail that your not home. • Never leave notes on your door that can tip off burglars. • Don’t leave keys to your home under the door mat, under rocks or other obvious locations burglars know these places. What do we do when we’re away for more than a day? • If possible, have your telephone calls forwarded to you when you are away from home. Burglars sometimes check to see if someone is home by making a telephone call. • Ask a neighbor that you trust to pick up the mail and newspaper on a daily basis. If possible, do not have either stopped. That gives information about you being away from home to others whom you do not know. • Have a plan in place to have the grass mowed, snow shoveled or driveway plowed. • Ask that trusted neighbor to put your garbage cans out to the street and take them back in. You may wish to have your neighbor use your garbage cans while you are out. Burglars sometimes check for empty cans as a sign that you are away. • There are systems available on the market that will open and close window draperies by timer. Constantly open or closed curtains can tip the burglar off that no one is home. • Even if you don't need specific help, always tell your trusted neighbor if you are going to be gone for a few days and how to reach you in case of an emergency. • If you are going to be gone for an extended period, ask your local law enforcement to check your home periodically. Basically, make your house look the same whether you are home or away. Eliminate hiding places • Make sure there is good lighting around the place where you park. • Install motion detection lights around your house instead of just leaving lights on at night. The lights coming on and turning off attract the attention of neighbors. Install these lights at least 8 feet above the ground so they are more difficult to disable. • Install the motion detector lights so they light all doors and windows. Doors, since they are the preferred entry point, should be the first priority to illuminate, followed by windows. • Remove bushes and shrubs from around the house, especially under windows and next to doors. Keep your yard free of overgrowth. • If you DO have shrubs and bushes, select ones with thorns to deter potential intruders from hiding in them. • Have a professionally installed security alarm system installed with a loud alarm and/or flashing lights which should be monitored. This will attract the attention of neighbors and alert the authorities. If you install an alarm, display the decals, and remember to test the system periodically. Use common sense caution • Always lock all doors and windows when you leave the house. • Use a peephole to identify visitors before opening your door. • Do not hide spare keys outside your home; instead give one to a trusted neighbor. • Do not provide your house keys to service people. • Do not invite strangers into your home. • Do not have money or jewelry lying out in view from a window. If possible, keep jewelry and other small valuables and important documents in a safe deposit box. • Do not tell strangers your daily routines. • If you are at home working outside, leave all other doors that are out of sight locked. • Avoid telling others about the valuables in your home. • If you have children, discuss home security with them, such as not talking with strangers about their home, its contents or family schedules. Make your home a harder target Did you know? The average burglar will spend no more than four to five minutes trying to break into a residence. • When moving into a new residence, have the locks changed. • Consult a good locksmith to make sure you have the correct types of locks on your doors and windows. • Secure your exterior doors and any doors from attached garages by installing: o Good quality deadbolt door locks o Security-type door strikes o Strong, properly installed doors and doorframes that cannot be spread apart o Security-type hinges • Secure your windows by installing additional locks and installing impact-resistant glass on any windows within 42" of a door lock. This will make it more difficult to break the glass, reach in, and unlock the lock. • Prune lower branches of trees near your house if they could help a burglar gain access to a second story window. • Secure your patio door with a pin-type lock, a key lock, or a steel rod inserted into the door channel. • Secure your garage by installing automatic openers or bolt-type locks on each end of the garage doors. Take time to become knowledgeable about your situation and your options so that you can best decide what to do. And remember, you can also ask your local police department for advice. Inventory and mark your belongings. Mark your belongings with an engraving pen so that they can be traced and return them to you if stolen. These pens are usually available at your local police station. Ask your police department what numbers to use when marking your belongings. Never mark them with your social security number. Be a good neighbor • Organize a cookout or other apartment or neighborhood get together so neighbors can get to know one another. • Organize or participate in an Apartment Watch or Neighborhood Watch program. • Arrange for a local police officer to complete an apartment security survey, or educate your neighborhood about specific safety concerns. • If you are an apartment dweller, notify management if you notice burned out light bulbs, dark corridors, broken locks on mailboxes and doors and/or other safety concerns. • Call the police immediately if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Business Theft- ERT Security Protecting you.

Retail theft, or shoplifting, is the theft of merchandise that is offered for sale most commonly in a retail store, and it is one of the most common crimes that are committed. Having surveillance cameras also commonly know as C.C.T.V. equipment can help deter crime. As the economic conditions worsen in our communities’ the problems we have now with shoplifting will only worsen.. There are many who are simply amateurs, while others are skilled criminals and groups that target particular locations, most often large chain stores. Many people feel that large companies will not miss the loss, but the reality is that all of us as consumers will pay more for items because of it. While much of the retail industry claims that shoplifting is the biggest cause of excessive costs, employee theft or fraud is the cause of an astounding 50% of the loss and can cost retailers on average $25 million a day. Most shoplifters rationalize or justify their actions within themselves that store merchandise is over-priced anyway and only benefit the owners and executives of the company at the shopper' s expense. The reality is that we all will pay more for merchandise at the registers as the stores make up for their loss. Shoplifters will eventually damage the targeted store's bottom line and increase their price causing consumers to shop elsewhere. To protect yourself from retail loss, it is important to understand the different types of shoplifters. There are those that simply do not wish to pay for items, others that get a thrill from stealing; some need the merchandise and lack the money to pay for it, and others who steal merchandise to sell at a profit. Shoplifters can also be store employees and security personnel that steal internally from the company that they are employed by. Part of retail loss prevention is monitoring the store for these illegal activities, visible and hidden surveillance cameras are worth the initial investment in stabilizing your bottom line. Cameras deter theft because in most cases the criminals don’t know where the cameras are looking and hidden cameras can deter employee theft. Cameras can be hidden in clocks, smoke detectors and other areas, some stores even install cameras directly over their cash registers. Generally merchants and store managers must follow several rules when performing an internal arrest and detainment. You must see the suspect enter the display area, witness the theft actually occurring, see where the suspect has concealed the item, and you must see the person leave the store without paying a CCTV system can assist in backing up your testimony and are also the eyes of your business when your not there. Retail and internal theft make all of us victims by the ripple effect.

Are you really protected at home or at work ? Ask ERT Security
You may have a state of the art security system installed but are your telephone lines protected ? Burglars realize most security systems sound inside the house and then the alarm is transferred to remote locations through the telephone lines. Most phone lines are typically exposed on the outside of the house in an easily accessible location where the phone line can be cut. If the telephone line is cut or is out because of a storm, the security alarm system cannot notify the central monitoring station of the break-in. If the phone line is run underground until it is inside the home (with the main telephone junction box inside the home), the thief cannot tamper with the telephone line until after he or she has broken in. ERT Security offers cellular back-up monitoring for all of it’s clients in addition to our standard monitoring for only $6.95 per month plus the installation of the cellular communicator. ERT Security Business Profile

BJ. Kirk, our company President and C.E.O., is a retired full time Emergency Medical Technician Basic, Volunteer Fire Fighter, Instructor, Chief of Security, a life long resident of Ashtabula County and a graduate of South Ridge Christian Academy and the Ashtabula County EMT-B & Fire Fighter classes. He is very family oriented coming from a large family and having two sons of his own. He is very team oriented and cares about each of his employees.

He brings to ERT Security more than 20 years of experience in the life safety industry having started his career in life safety at the age of 17 as an alarm dispatcher for a local alarm company moving through the ranks in the system design and installation departments soon becoming Operations Manager for the entire company. After many years of working for that company he was offered a position with a new alarm company opening in the area as a Territory Sales Manager. Currently disappointed in how the company he was working for was treating the clients and the many service complaints he was receiving with no changes being allowed by the companies management he gladly accepted the position hoping that the new company and their promises to him in keeping the clients needs first would stand true but after several months the new company quickly lost sight of the main objective and what was promised of keeping the clients first in the protection of their lives and property and he soon became disheartened and frustrated.

Seeking another alarm company to work for that shared the same values, integrity, principles and commitment to how a client should be treated without deception and negligent sales tactics and to exceed a client’s expectations none could be found. In June 1989 he went off on his own opening ERT Security as a private consulting company designing systems and negotiating contracts between the different alarm companies on behalf of his clients protecting their interests by knowing the games, selling practices, and tactics that the other companies use and still do. Then in 2007 he expanded ERT Security in several ways; he expanded the company into a full service life safety company now offering sales, service, installations and 24 hour UL Listed alarm monitoring. The second change was the opening of the Cincinnati and Akron, Ohio offices. He completed these expansions because the other companies were still not keeping the clients best interest in mind and he knew what the clients expected. He grew up in business management and industry having worked for both of his parents multiple local companies since he was a young child and took that experience and knowledge that he grew up with and applied it to his own company and took advice from his grandfather who was an originating partner in Iten Industries.

BJ is sincerely a dedicated client advocate, he knows how to bring clients the best solutions for their needs, what they expect from an alarm company, working with them to obtain the protection they need and working with their budget. He stands strong and unwavering in his commitment to provide the best service, the best monitoring, the best protection, and all at an affordable price to his clients. He takes a great deal of criticism from other company owners in the industry over his low prices but since day one he still remembers why he started the company and that was to treat the every client right and fairly and to make a modest and honest profit. BJ and his entire team of professionals are ready to partner with you in the protection of your most valuable assets, your life, family, property, employees and your business of any size.
